EFFECTIVE CURRICULUM DELIVERY

The college is affiliated to Mizoram University, Aizawl, and follows the University pre-designed curriculum. The University prepares the Academic Calendar specifying the duration of the semester, the date of commencement and the end of the semesters. The college operates at the under graduate level and offers Arts and Commerce streams. The Arts Stream offers B.A course in nine subjects. For effective implementation of the courses the commerce course operates in two shifts - day and morning shift.

  • The Academic and Examination Committee comprising the Principal, vice-Principal, the heads of departments and trained experts amongst the teaching and non-teaching staff frame the plan of action every semester, conduct examinations, evaluation and assessment system on the basis of the pre-designed curriculum and within the time framed by the Mizoram University.
  • The Academic and Examination Committee prepares the schedule of work for each subject semester-wise, this schedule of work is made available in the college prospectus for references.
  • The curriculum delivery is effectively done through lectures, supported by LCD projectors. Website and book references, and printed study materials are also provided to the students. This is complemented by internal examinations, group discussions, seminars and interactive sessions.
  • The curriculum for teaching is assigned to each Head of Department and lesson plan is prepared in accordance with the given framework of time. Each department conducts internal meetings and develop the structure for the curriculum delivery for the students and workload assigned to the teachers.
  • Extra classes are conducted if there are constraints to complete the curriculum. In each academic semester internal tests are conducted thrice in every department and assignments, seminars and presentations are part of the curriculum in each semester.
  • At the end of each semester, the students have to appear for external examination.

Teachers are encouraged to use ICT in classes and training in computer is provided to enable them to use the modern technological resources such as internet, projectors etc. to supplement their class room lectures and develop the academic and personal performances of the students.

SUPPORT FOR EFFECTIVELY TRANSLATING THE CURRICULUM AND IMPROVING TEACHING PRACTICES

The college is affiliated to Mizoram University and the faculty receive the needed support for effectively translating the curriculum and improving the teaching practices in the following ways:

Procedural Support:

  • The university provides an academic calendar that specifies the duration of the semester, the date of commencement of semester, the semester break and the end of semester examination.
  • The university provides guidelines for course specifications, internal assessment and examinations. It also provides the date-sheets and organizes the conduct of final examinations including setting of question papers and evaluation of answer scripts.
  • The faculty are deputed by the university to prepare, moderate and evaluate external semester examination questions besides preparing internal assessment for the college.
  • When the syllabus is revised or modified the concerned department faculties are deputed to attend the workshop.
  • For faculty improvement programme and quality improvement programmes conducted by the university, other institutions and agencies, the college deputes faculty members to attend Refresher/ Orientation Courses for updating and upgrading their subject knowledge and to improve their teaching practices.
  • In-house workshops, seminars and discussions are also organized by the various departments of the University to disseminate the inputs gained from the orientation and refresher programmes.
  • Research journals are published by the different departments and schools of the university to inculcate and promote research culture among faculties of the college. Faculties who are in the process of research are encouraged to publish articles in journals of national and international repute.
  • The Institution provides library and e-learning facilities (INFLIBNET) to the students to make them well-versed with the curriculum.

The initiatives taken up and the contribution made by Hrangbana College to effectively deliver the curriculum provided by the Mizoram University are as follows:

  • Hrangbana College has a learning-centered approach in curriculum delivery. At the first instance, the new entrants are made familiar with the curriculum and the choices available to them through a detailed explanation of the choices and combinations of subjects in the prospectus and the admission helpdesk, along with the systematic course schedule and institutional requirements. Secondly, the detailed curriculum are made easily understandable through specific individual class orientation on the first day of each semester.
  • Efforts are made to ensure that the curriculum is implemented efficiently and innovatively through a wide variety of approaches in delivery, besides the usual classroom teaching. The Curriculum is effectively delivered by undertaking research and survey projects, group works, seminars and mock drills of real life situations.
  • The students are taken for educational tours to fairs, offices, exhibitions and places of political, industrial and historical importance to provide them firsthand knowledge. Every year, students go for educational tours outside Mizoram, even as far as New Delhi to experience the Indian Parliamentary workings.
  • Furthermore, for effective curriculum delivery, the college has made provision for special/ remedial classes for slow learners and for those students with long leave from classes on account of NCC camp or participation in the sports activities. At the same time, advanced learners are identified and motivated to maximise their potentials and aspire for excellence.

  • The Commerce Department of the college interacts annually with existing industries. During the last five years students visited, interacted and surveyed industries which manufacture matply, bamboo chips and ply, paper bag, indigenous cosmetic, handloom, florist etc, within and outside the capital city, such as:

The faculty members of the college are also motivated to take up research projects initiated by the affiliating university or the UGC.   • The teaching faculty of the college keeps in touch regularly with the Mizoram University and get the latest information from the university regarding their own respective subjects, eg, revision of syllabus, setting of question papers, updating curriculum etc..
  • The University appoints faculty of the college as Board of Studies from different departments to keep themselves abreast with the latest trends in their respective fields.
  • Seminars and workshops are organised in the college in collaboration with the respective departments in the university
